Love this! Your reframing of leader rhetoric resonates nicely with me! I’m eager to hear more about the positive/negative framing effects you have found. One thing I’d like to hear more about is your thoughts on collaborating in the workplace!
I'm going to make a big effort to try and implement this and take note about the reactions. I'll follow up! What aspect of collaborating in the workplace??
I'm with you! For years I've been getting my husband to replace the word busy with other choices. It gives more meaning to what we do and stops being an excuse for what we haven't gotten to.
I’ve been trying to catch myself from saying “I’m busy” as an excuse to turn down plans, in favor of being more honest about simply choosing to do something else / nothing. But! Annoyingly, it’s the one excuse no one questions, so it’s so tempting to use it and save myself from having to justify declining whatever I’m being asked to do.
Also, related hardcore to not feeling busy and questioning myself for it. It’s not just in our head either—people are comforted by that type of performance/suffering. One time I was told at work that I looked too laid back. So I made it a point to look hassled as I walked to the printer to print concert tickets and people stopped questioning me.
I feel like I've been so busy is the new socially acceptable "weather chit chit." Busy just fills the space in a nonspecific inoffensive way. I get bored when people start talking about how busy they are. "I've just been busy at work, and you know home's been crazy, and I've been so tied up with some other stuff." Tell me what you've been doing that's making you so busy!
